Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me.

Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang.

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

A delayed FYI

Just so you know, according to sources $godofodd and $realitysquared --

- Deviations saying you dislike a member [or their art apparently!] are against the rules (see: my stamp removal, !AwesomeLurker's ban) but not officially [except screencaps] as according to the ticket I made.
- Journals and comments calling people out are against the rules [see: #butthurtbrigade's removal] and also not [see: #I-Call-Bull still being around despite doing the same things].
- Journals are considered deviations [throughout the site and for "reposting deleted content"], but also not [being referred to as separate from deviations in my ticket]. They are equal to deviations in regards to content, but also not as you can possibly maybe who knows really post call-out journals whereas you can't post call-out deviations.

We try to allow users to express their opinions and beliefs freely, but we do draw a line at personal attacks. .... As I've said previously, we're removing content that is considered direct, targeted abuse or harassment, specifically aimed at individual users. ....[but, when I linked to journals and deviations personally attacking me and to ICB...] We are not actively looking at our policies regarding "call out journals" at this time [which contradicts what was said in $realitysquared's journal] .... We review reports on a case-by-case basis. .... You're welcome to continue reporting journals and deviations that you feel are abusive and we will review them and take action where it's necessary.

So in other words: Nothing has changed. If you're on the shit list you're still going to get shat on, except this time they can defend it because LOL RULES CHANGED (FOR YOU).
