The dogOnce upon a time,
There was a house and a dog.
The dog did not live in the house, though.
Instead, he lived in the field.
There was no telling when he'd visit,
But he often did.

The family disliked the dog.
They were a kind and gentle family,
But this dog brought something to them
That upset and tormented them,
Though they could not say what it was.

On one of the dog's visits,
The child was playing in the yard.
He approached her,
And she felt transfixed by his presence.

He stood in front of her
And they gazed upon each other,
Until the dog spoke to her.

She returned to the house.
She said only one word, then no more.
